Boys Lacrosse Philosophy
Leonardtown Boy’s Lacrosse strives to have scholar athletes who compete at their highest level of physical ability and strive to succeed in the classroom and on the field.    During the 2008 season, over 30% of the players on its JV and Varsity rosters had a 4.0 GPA or better.  Over 75% of both teams had at least a 3.0 GPA.  Many of our players take AP classes which can earn them college credits while still in high school.  The boy’s lacrosse program at Leonardtown is proud to have 6 former players attending United States Military Academies, as well as many colleges around the country.  In its 10 years in existence, Leonardtown boy’s lacrosse has produced 7 total All-Americans, 3 of them Academic All-Americans.
The education each student receives at Leonardtown High School is taught by Highly Qualified Teachers who are all certified by the state of Maryland in their specific content area.  It prepares each student for life during and after high school, whether a student has goals of college, military, or the work force after graduation.  The services Leonardtown High School provides helps students achieve any goals they set.  With the help of the school’s Guidance Office and Career Center, the students of the graduating class of 2008 were offered over 9.5 million dollars in total scholarships.
Leonardtown Lacrosse encourages its players to play for other sports teams during the fall and winter seasons.  We feel a player who is active year round in any sport can only help them when spring comes.  It also helps a player when applying to colleges when they are a well-rounded student.  Over the past 26 years, Leonardtown High School has won the Enterprise Sports Trophy 25 of those years.  This trophy is awarded to one of the four St. Mary’s County high schools for having the best winning percentage for all three sports seasons combined.  During the 2007-2008 school year, the other three high schools win average was between 31% and 35% overall, while Leonardtown took the trophy with a 71% winning average.  A lacrosse player in the spring also has a great opportunity for athletic success in the fall and winter.
Leonardtown, in its short existence, has risen up the power rankings. Laxpower.com had Leonardtown Boys Lacrosse team ranked 6th in the State of Maryland at the end of the 2008 season. Laxpower.com also ranks the Leonardtown Boys lacrosse team 21st in the regional rankings for the Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia area. That ranking includes public and private schools participating in Varsity Lacrosse.
After its first decade in existence, over 12 Leonardtown Lacrosse players have chosen to continue their lacrosse careers at the collegiate level. The coaching staff consists of 6 to 7 coaches whose combined experience and dedication to the program and its players set an example for each young man. Its coaching staff takes pride in preparing the players for any situation they may face on and off the field. With four consecutive SMAC championships from 2005-2008, Leonardtown Lacrosse will continue to accept the challenge of coaching students whose work ethic and desire will keep the program growing and succeeding for years to come.
